North-West of Tavolara Island, clear of Punta Timone, I spotted an Atlantic Puffin (
Fratercula arctica): I was with Pina Contis and Lalla Caredddu and this is the first such observation within the area. The Puffin is a typical species of North Atlantic, where they reproduce in colonies digging deep holes in the ground or using those of rabbits and shearwaters. It feeds on fish it hunts by diving. It winters in pelagic environments moving South: a small quota of a few tens of specimens reach western Mediterranean and the Tyrrhenum. In Sardinia, observations and captute of such specimens are few, but their presence as migrants seems constant, although in small numbers. Therefore they can be considered a rare species, as demonstrated by the absence of observations during the
Morus 2009 Project which deals with
migratory birds along the italian coasts.
